Koryn Hawthorne displays a voice and manner much more mature than her years. Before becoming a finalist on NBC's The Voice, she was “a normal teenager” from a small town, singing with a worship group at church, nursing homes, and benefits. While on the show, she impressed the coaches with her talent, work ethic, and authenticity. Adam Levine pointed out that never before in the history of the show had he seen "such a drastic, incredible, unbelievable journey.” Pharrell Williams compared her drive to succeed to that of Beyoncé. Coached first by Christina Aguilera and then Pharrell Williams, the 17-year old Gospel/Soul/R&B phenom rose to the final four in season eight of the hit series. Her rendition of the Gospel classic "How Great Thou Art" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart on April 25. Kirk Franklin joined Hawthorne in this distinction on September 19, making them the only two artists to achieve this feat in 2015.
